Reception theory.


The reception theory shows that each person interprets something differently to other people. This is based on cultural background, social life and experiences. For example if two people looked at a poster of a food, one person might think that it looks good and they want to go out and buy it. The second person might think differently and think it doesn’t look appealing to them and they are not going to buy it but they understand why people will want to buy it. This is could because they are of a different gender and have different ethical views. 


For this photography task we were asked to get into groups of 3/4 and devise 3 different stories in a photograph. Then go round college and ask people what they think is going on in the photograph. 



 For this photography the dominant reading is, marriage proposal. Most people who looked at this photo got what was going on, apart from some negotiating options where they thought it was begging.
For this photo the dominant reading is they are having a fight. Everyone we asked understood what was going on in the photograph.  
For this photo the dominant reading is that someone is being hit by a car. Most people got this but there was some opposing opinions, where they thought the people in the picture had just brought a car.

tom dowler


Assignment: The Music Industry-New Band/Artist Proposal


The name of our artist is Tom dowler and his stage name is dynamic. His genre of music is dance and he is a dj. He is from London and he grew up with this type of music, so he thought he could make his own. His visual style is casual jeans and t-shirt’s for when he’s preforming gigs. His music influences are disclosure, SBTRKT, sub focus, Julio bashmore, mosca bondax, George Fitzgerald and the xxxy. His merchandise is t-shirts, headphones and hoodies. His merchandise will have his logo on it and will be sold at his gigs, as well as online websites. His target audience is 18-30 year olds, because the genre is quite is chilled and upbeat at the same time. It wouldn’t appeal to an older audience, because it’s quite an electronic party song that you would dance to. He hopes to tour with disclosure in the future and maybe collaboration. He wants people to enjoy his music and feel a happy vibe whilst they listen to it.

For this assignment were asked to create a new band/artist with various graphics tasks. When we first received this assignment we were concerned about first of all who were going to use for our pictures and second of all weather to make a band or a single artist. We came to the decision that we would create single artists because the genre, which was, chilled garage house dj was easier to use a single person, because you don’t see many DJ’s in pairs.
   We then came up with the basics of our artist, his real name is Tom dowler but his stage name is Dynamic we chose this because it was edgy and it’s something people will remember.  We then made four different logos, all of them were very different and to help us decide which one to choose we carried out a focus group. I think one of our weaknesses was our focus group because it didn’t really go that well, because the people in the group weren’t really responsive and didn’t give us the greatest of feedback. After our focus group we evaluated our feedback. We mostly got positive feedback about our artist, a lot of them said that our artist had commercial potential and they would listen to our artist music.
       One of our strengths was when we had all our research we went around the college to find someone appropriate to be our artist. We found a model in the drama department, and he was happy to pose for our pictures. We were very happy with the pictures we took, because he was the kind of guy we had in mind for our artist. We then edited them on Photoshop, and changed the colour to black and white. We came up with the idea to have one main picture and then have three more pictures behind fading slightly.  We came up with this idea because it was different and worked really well as a cd front cover. I think the faded pictures show the different personality of his music. After this we then made our poster which is the same as the album cover but just says ‘’ album to come soon’’ I think this was a weakness of ours because we didn’t know whether to do something completely different for the poster. We are happy we chose the same as the album cover because people would know what to expect when the album comes out.
             Overall I think we managed our time effectively because we were organised and both had different things to do, so things we were getting done on time. We are both happy with our final submission; it’s turned out how we imaged it to. We are happy that we have created an artist that has a lot of potential and will be successful. If we could change anything about our assignment it would be to do another focus group and get better and different feedback.  I think it would of helped us more with the final product.

Genre- Is a monthly fashion, celebrity and lifestyle magazine.

Production House- Company magazine, published by the National Magazine Company, is one of the largest digital publishers in the UK. Their reach extends to 1 in 4 UK women and 1 in 6 UK adults. The portfolio comprises 20 magazines and 20 digital properties. Hearst Magazine UK is the trading name of National Magazine Company Ltd, established in 1910 by William Randolph Hearst and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hearst Corporation, one of the largest diversified media companies. Its major interests include magazine, newspaper and business publishing, cable networks, television and radio broadcasting, Internet businesses, TV production and distribution, newspaper features distribution and real estate.

Producer-
It celebrated its 30th birthday in 2008, and in that time has had only six editors: Maggie Goodman, Gil Hudson, Mandi Norwood, Fiona Macintosh, Sam Baker, and the current editor - Victoria White.
Fiona McIntosh, the founding editor of Grazia magazine, and is to join online designer fashion e-commerce website My-Wardrobe.com as a consultant. She is a also a former editor of Elle, Company and the London Evening Standard's ES magazine, is to take on a newly created role as consultant creative director at the online fashion retailer
Victoria white previously worked on women’s magazine called B as deputy editor. She was there for two years before the magazine closed down and she got the opportunity to move to company.

Content-   This magazine’s content is mainly about fashion. It has four different sections about fashion. The first one is street style spy, which is where they go out, and look at what the general public are wearing each month and what has changed in the fashion world. They also look at what people are wearing to London fashion week and New York fashion week to see how the style is different. The next category is hot high street fashion. This is they see what each shop is selling and which shops have the cheapest deals. Thirdly they have a section were they look at what the hottest celebrities’ are wearing and see if they can steal their style but for a cheaper amount. Finally they have shoe of the week, were they see what the most popular shoe is and show you were you could get one that looks the same but buy a different brand and it may be cheaper. Apart from the fashion aspect of the magazine they also have a beauty where they give the best beauty tips to young teenagers. They also have a sex and advice page where people write in with their problems, which are mostly about relationship problems, general life and sex.

Style Production-  On the front cover of each company magazine they have a different celebrity each month, these celebrity’s are mainly women as it will attract the female target audience. The font on the magazine is very feminine


Target Audience- This magazine it sells itself to a female target audience with its fashion articles and interviews with female artists that are also role models to the potential female customers.
